MOSES GARANG
Moses Garang was separated from his parent in 1989 when he was about seven-years-old. He recalls being startled awake by gunshots in the darkness and then being swept into a stampede of frantic citizens. Soon, he was amongst the “Lost Boys and Girls of Sudan” fleeing the government militia, trekking 1,100 miles across the sweltering desert to Ethiopia and then finally to an overcrowded refugee camp in Kenya. Moses was amongst the children who survived the harrowing journey and resettled in the US, marking the end of one ordeal and the beginning of another – the challenges of adjusting to life in America. Moses co-founded the Southern Sudan Community of Washington. Today, he is a senior at Western Washington University.
