AGNES OSWAHA

Agnes Oswaha arrived in Seattle, from Sudan, at the age of 21. She hadn’t anticipated the sense of isolation she would feel in her new community. So along with a friend, Harriett Dumba, Agnes founded the Southern Sudanese Women’s Association, a non-profit aimed at helping newly resettled Sudanese in Washington state adjust to life in the U.S. Agnes and Harriett also launched Hearts of Angels for Health -Sudan Initiative (www.hah-s.org), which focuses on empowering Sudanese women and men to overcome their traumatic pasts and develop skills in conflict resolution and health care. As a certified HIV/AIDS instructor with the American Red Cross, Agnes has organized HIV/AIDS workshops locally and in Sudan. Agnes earned a Masters in Social Work from the University of Washington. She now works with the Government of Southern Sudan Mission in Washington, DC.
