Erika Berg
Raised in a Eurasian family, Erika Berg grew up straddling cultures. After graduating with a BA in Psychology from UC Berkeley where she lived at the International House, Erika worked for several New York publishers. By day she published books about world literature. After hours, she taught English to refugees, developed global education programs, and organized documentary screenings and panel discussions about cultures in conflict. After hearing one too many stories of injustice, Erika resigned from her 24-year publishing career to volunteer in India with Tibetan refugee children who had fled Tibet over the Himalayas. As Community Outreach Coordinator for Lutheran Community Services Northwest’s Refugee and Immigrant Children’s Program (www.refugeechildren.net), Erika now has another reason to raise awareness of the challenges of refugees: to identify potential foster parents for the most vulnerable refugees of all, refugee children without an adult caregiver.
